Oversight

Well, we completely forgot to haul the wizened Kobold seers away from what they assure us are absolutely vital day-to-day duties in order to have them give us their baseball prognostications before the season actually started. However, we eventually got around to it.

First of all, the wizened Kobold seers told us that they foresee a subway Series this year. "Yup," they said, "it's gonna be Brooklyn versus the Bronx!" Ok, so the seers are a little out of date (did I already mention that they're wizened?). Anyway, it's apparently going to be Dodgers-Yankees.

When pressed about the eventual fate of the Toronto Blue Jays, the seers looked shifty, and said that the Jays would probably start the season brightly, particularly in terms of offence, but that there might be some problems with the closer's spot. "After the first, oh, six or so games of the season, in which we predict that the Jays will go five and one," they continued, "the waters of divination grow murky. However, third in the AL East sounds reasonable, all things considered. Second and the wild-card are not out of the realm of possibility. Neither is fourth. As we said, the omens aren't that clear."

Sign Of Spring

There is a sign of spring in the air, despite it being a solid -15 degrees Celsius outside right now! Furthermore, this sign has nothing whatsoever to do with sciophobic groundhogs! In fact, it is entirely encapsulated in the phrase: "pitchers and catchers report."

And who is that nice lady? Well, her name is Kim Ng, and, if Sports Illustrated is to be believed, she may well be the person to whom is entrusted the task of fixing what ails the Seattle Mariners. This would, obviously, be a first for North American major pro sports, and an overdue and welcome one at that!

Yes, it's that special time of year for the sports fan, when spring is in the air, the grass is newly green, and the painted lines on the field seem crisper than normal. Questions abound: who will be this year's surprise team? What player, unforseen by scouts and pundits, will step forward and make his mark? Is this the year that the league's juggernauts are finally overtaken? And do Tartu JK Maag Tammeka have what it takes to survive another season in the Meistriliiga? Yes, rejoice, another season of Estonian League soccer is upon us!!!

Turning to baseball, which also has just begun, wizened Kobold seers have peered into the murky waters of their scrying cauldrons, wherein they beheld the Tigers and Mets in the 2008 World Series. You heard it here first, especially the bit about the Kobold seers. As for the all-important question of the Blue Jays... I honestly have no idea. They're already (still?) a bit banged up, but Wells is due for a return to form, and they're actually fairly deep in both hitting and pitching. We shall see, we shall see...

What Is Wrong With This Picture?

As most baseball fans are aware, this is to be the last season for famed Yankee Stadium, with that building's tenants set to move into new digs in 2009. Therefore, one major question concerns what would be a fitting send-off for the 85-year-old venue. Obviously, Yankees-Red Sox would work, given their fierce rivalry, and the fact that those two teams opened Yankee Stadium back in 1923 (4-1 Yankees, Ruth 3-run HR). You could also make a case for Yankees-Mets, Yankees-Dodgers, or Yankees-Giants (Yay, interleague play!).

However, in considering those matchups, one overlooks the most blindingly obvious suggestion, that being that Yankee Stadium should be closed by...

The New York Rangers.

Now, Yankee Stadium has hosted non-baseball sporting events, in particular football, but also soccer:

Furthermore, we here in the warrens give a scaly orange thumbs-up to outdoor ice hockey. The Heritage Classic in sub-zero Fahrenheit temperatures in Edmonton, and the game played in a blizzard a couple of months ago in Buffalo were both great fun.
